Situ Research
The design, fabrication and research firm Situ Studio asked me to design and code a website for their new branch Situ Research. Situ Research is a multi-disciplinary research team focused on using architecture and visualization to explore human rights violations, earth sciences, and material explorations. The website needed to stay consistent with Situ Studio's branding but provide a more flexible framework for their media-rich research.
A Different Approach
Situ Studio's research driven projects in the past were presented on the Situ Studio website template. However, the structure of that site was not well suited for displaying large research reports. At the research reports where shown in through image slideshow built for Situ Studio and Fabrication. This template forced the research team to present their research projects as embedded pdfs limiting the amount of video and image content they needed to show.
About Situ Research
Situ Research's About pages were about telling the story of their work, highlighting the people that made their work possible and creating a sense of legitimacy for future business. The About page therefore presented key project images, provided a short biography explaining the divisions of the company, and provided a list of collaborators to acknowledge their business partners.
Key project images were hyperlinked to specific product pages and developed to allow the client to swap projects in and out through their CMS. In addition, a revamped "People" page highlighted each employee including their title, contact information and division.
Work Index
The Work Index follows the approach seen in Situ Studio and Situ Fabrication. However, we added a taxonomy to each project which allowed the site be categorized and sorted based on research project type. The categorization was an important addition to the site to organize and simplify work types.
Project Template Design
Situ Research produces heavily visual and interactive graphics supported by text in their reports. The new template approach was to break the structure of Situ Studio allowing for images, text and video to exist together. Allowing content to be formatted in a flexible grid allowed for Situ Research to present their reports in an engaging system. Additionally, it was important to tag each project by category, provide a short summary, list collaborators and provide users with additional links if the project had external documents that were relevant.
News & Contact
The News and Contact pages stayed consistent with Situ Studio and Research. The News page is sortable by year showing upcoming events or previous awards won. The Contact page provides users with mailing and email addresses for prospective clients or press inquires.
